As we begin the new academic year on Monday, June 2nd, we want to take a moment to thank each of you for supporting Aikya’s mission & showing confidence that together, we can make a difference. While we have not yet fully achieved all our objectives, we are progressing very well with your continued support & helping more than 450 children across 3 govt schools, in a dedicated way.
We would like to share a brief update reflecting on the progress we made last year. After entering a formal agreement with Anekal school (Bengaluru) to improve the quality of education, the challenge was to systematically address the issue of learning gaps. So, we decided to focus on 2 core areas with clear & measurable goals.
1. Remedial Program (Classes 4–8):
Objective: Bridge literacy & numeracy gaps and bring students up to age-appropriate learning levels.
Implementation: We conducted a baseline assessment of each child’s learning level & grouped students accordingly. Targeted remedial sessions were conducted daily for 40 minutes throughout the year, aligned with each group’s pace.
2. Foundational Stage Education (LKG to Class 3):
Objective: Strengthen foundational skills i.e. early literacy and numeracy skills to avoid the future need for remedial support.
Implementation: We procured activity-based content for English & Maths for better understanding of language & concepts, developed a elaborated phonics teaching plan & set up a reading corner, to improve reading skills of children (this was needed as children do not have exposure to English skills outside of school). As we progressed, we realized that to complement our effort, we need to involve parents more, boost the confidence of children & focus on their personal growth. So, we decided to work on 2 more areas – cultural changes & extra-curricular/co-curricular activities.
3. Cultural Changes:
Objective: Encourage parent’s involvement & establish practices-protocols on par with private schools.
Implementation: We introduced structured practices such as parent-teacher meetings after every exam, progress cards, homework diaries, weekly lesson plans, & few assembly activities.
4. Co-curricular & Extracurricular:
Objective: Boost students’ confidence & promote personal growth.
Implementation: We organized various events and activities such as science fest, art-craft classes, scholarship classes etc. to nurture students’ creativity, enhance self-esteem and develop a sense of accomplishment. In the upcoming academic year, we will continue to focus on above four areas. Additionally, we will focus on developing communication skills, writing abilities, socio-emotional skills & positive learning habits among our students. Thank you once again for your unwavering support & trust in Aikya’s vision.Together, we are shaping brighter futures.
