A Reading Corner, step towards building a lifelong reading habit.
Last year, our close friend Gargi Bosebegan a beautiful initiative in memory of her mother, Smt. Manjula Bose – setting up a Reading Corner in a government school on her mother’s birthday. She has continued this meaningful initiative this year too, adding another school to the journey.
For us at Aikya, a Reading Corner is much more than a shelf filled with books. For many of the children we work with, it is an opportunity to discover that reading can be joyful, exciting and something they can explore on their own. When children begin reading regularly, they don’t just learn new words. They gradually develop better language skills, comprehension, imagination, a reading habit and the confidence to express themselves.
Gargi visited all the three schools supported by Aikya, spending time with the children and distributing snacks and stationery. She also continues to sponsor the education of several children. Many children presented her with beautiful handmade greeting cards – a simple but heartfelt expression of their love and gratitude.
Thank you very much Gargi Bose, for keeping your mother’s memory alive in such a meaningful way and for being a part of Aikya’s journey.
